AT FIRST GLANCE: An Editor’s Review

Since I’m an editor of this work I can only give my opinion of the story itself, as it was handed to me, for it was perfection and needed nothing changed.

I had nothing to do with the first two novels by this author, but I was blown away by both. When I received this newest installment, I immediately devoured the pages.  This story is for those appreciative of an in-depth story line.  The attention to detail is enchanting.  Petra’s writing style always makes me feel personally invested in the character’s lives, which I find a redeeming quality.  It’s passionate and heartbreaking; a beacon for the emotional junkie in everyone.

REVIEW

I have, yet again, been blown away by the poetically brilliant mind of Petra March!

A short sequel to the novel, “A Veil of Glass and Rain“, we are given an intimate portrait of a sweet young man, whose life is taking a dramatic turn.  The writing is exquisite, raw, and painful.

David’s story begins as it ends, with a jolt of heartbreak.  As the present and past flutter in and out with his consciousness, a story of self discovery and regret emerge.  Although it is a novella, there is a lifetime of emotion perfectly fitted in this small package. I recommend reading the first novel, as it is a most extraordinary read that will give a more detailed background on the secondary characters here, but it can also be read as a stand-alone.

I cried.  I’m not a sappy reader, and I rarely find an author gifted enough to invoke my inner crybaby with such fierce skill, but this is no ordinary author.  This author is an artist. I couldn’t put this down, and I cannot wait to see what this talented young woman has for us in the future!

Highly recommend to lovers of dramatic reads that leave you grief-stricken, but wanting more!

Excerpt

Prologue

Now.

My name is David Medwin. I’m twenty-one years old. Something bad happened to me.

These are the last, precious moments of my existence. So, while my body is still shrouded in merciful numbness, I let my mind and my soul awaken and wander.

I hold on to my memories and my regrets.

I drink in the world for the last time.

The sky is a dense, dark-blue blanket studded with bright stars. The air is heavy with the sweet scent of flowers and pine trees. The cheerful voices of the night creatures perform a pastoral symphony just for my soul.

No, that’s not right. I’m not alone.

My friend Eagan is resting beside me. His eyelids flutter restlessly, speaking of an uneasy slumber. As I contemplate my best friend, terrible, unexpected anguish surges within my chest. It’s a cold, frightening, strong sensation that forces my mind to focus on my body. My limbs feel strangely weightless, as if I were floating, and my skin were made of dust. But I’m flesh and bones, and my mind knows that the soft numbness is a temporary relief and the sudden sadness brimming inside of me mean something. Something painful.

I’m not alone. Eagan is with me, which means that something bad happened to him as well. I hope he’s not hurt. I want him to live. I don’t want to leave him.

I glance at Eagan once more. My friend’s eyes blink open and, for an infinite moment, his blue gaze lingers upon my features not with familiar kindness, but with fear; then Eagan’s lips part in a wordless cry.

REVIEW!! A Veil of Glass and Rain:Special Edition by Petra March (A Touch of Cinnamon, Book 1)

SEMC 3MP DSC

Synopsis

Brina and Eagan meet for the first time when she’s nine and he’s fourteen. They like each other from the very beginning, though their bond isn’t immediate, but it grows over the years. What links them is the fact that their parents are photographers and are extremely devoted to their work and to each other; so much so that both Brina and Eagan have to learn how to take care of themselves from a very young age. Despite their differences, age, gender, nationality – Brina is Italian and Eagan is American – they find comfort in their growing friendship.

Then Brina becomes a teenager, and her feelings for her friend start changing and deepening. New desires stir within her. As soon as Brina realizes how those feelings complicate her friendship with Eagan, she runs away from him.

A few years later, Brina is twenty and Eagan is twenty-five, they find one another once again.

Publisher’s Note: This is a fully re-edited and enriched with new and special contents version of the previously published novel, A Veil of Glass and Rain, by Petra F. Bagnardi (aka Petra March).

Review

This was a very passionate, romantic, and emotional novel!

Brina and Eagan have a very intense relationship that many can understand, but not all. The depth of their love is tormenting, while at the same time comforting. Their need for one another is complicated by their need for independence. As their background is given, the pieces fall into place, making this a wonderful read as a whole!

I devoured this book! March’s writing style is expressive and dramatic, which hooked me from the start. There’s a musician inside of her somewhere, as she shares songs at the end, but her writing throughout this novel has a certain melody of its own.

While the story spans over several years, the narration flips from the past to present, then from Brina to Eagan. The author manages this change of direction in a most expert manner, adding complexity to the story. The sensual scenes are explicit, and wonderful! Setting is depicted beautifully, secondary characters are strong, and the flow starts as a steady stream only to turn into a raging river of speed reading.  I loved this novel & I highly recommend to lovers of deep romance!
