REVIEW: HILLARY RODHAM CLINTON On The Couch by Alma H. Bond, PH.D.

SYNOPSIS

In the fourth installment of her “On the Couch” series, famed female biographer Dr. Alma Bond looks inside the head and life of presidential frontrunner and informs voters what she’s found.

REVIEW

This is the most original concept I’ve come across!

What an extraordinary read! I felt like a fly on the wall in Dr. Darcy Dale’s office, as the author has a gift for depicting a situation as if it is actually occurring. Every chapter was an open doorway to a room full of intimate details about the former First Lady, which made the sessions more realistic. From birth to Benghazi, and beyond, this novel explores Clinton in a most enjoyable, and sometimes heartbreaking, manner.

I’m not a colossal fan of politics, but Hillary Rodham Clinton has always intrigued me. I’ve read several articles in the past, but her story has more depth than I originally considered. The Bibliography is quite extensive; therefore, this was getting several points of reference at once. When you consider what this woman has been through and how she persevered, it’s hard not to admire her. Alma H. Bond, Ph.D. has delivered a powerful interpretation of an enigmatic figure!

I think it’s brilliant!

Author Q&A: The Tempting of Thomas Carrick by Stephani Laurens

RELEASE DATE: FEBRUARY 24TH

TTOTC cover

SYNOPSIS

Thomas Carrick is determined to make his own life in the bustling port city of Glasgow, far from the demands of the Carrick clan, eventually with an appropriate wife on his arm. But disturbing events on his family’s estate force Thomas to return to the Scottish countryside—where he is forced to ask for help from the last woman he wants to face. Thomas has never forgotten Lucilla Cynster and the connection that seethes between them, but to marry Lucilla would mean embracing a life he’s adamant is not for him.

Strong-willed and passionate, Lucilla knows Thomas is hers—her fated lover, husband, protector, mate. He is the only man for her, just as she is his one true love. How can he ignore a bond stronger than reason and choose a different path? She’s determined to fight for their future, and while she cannot command him, she has enticements of her own to wield when it comes to tempting Thomas Carrick.

Q&A

Thomas and Lucilla are both especially strong and stubborn characters, as so many of your heroes and heroines are. Is there a particular reason for this a) in general, and b) in this particular case?

In the general sense, I’ve always used strong characters because the scale and intensity of emotional clashes between such characters is more powerful, has the potential to be more wide-ranging, and is also likely to strike brighter sparks. A strong character doesn’t give way when someone opposes them or gets in the way of their will and drive—they immediately push back, and that refusal to back away is one of the key elements that leads such a pair of characters deeper and deeper into Cupid’s snare as they are forced to adjust and adapt to each other–a critical element of establishing an emotional partnership.
There’s a general assumption that strong and confident characters will have an easier time dealing with love, however, in reality I think it’s the opposite, and such characters find the existence of an emotion strong enough to make them change difficult to accept.
Which brings me rather neatly to Thomas and Lucilla. He is the ultimate strong character with a very powerful, emotional, and deeply personal reason to shut himself off from love. Against that, Lucilla, an equally strong character, is unswervingly convinced that they are fated to love and marry—but she, too, has a few lessons to learn in what love—even a fated love—will demand.
In short, my motivation for using strong characters can be summed up as: the stronger they are, the more they resist and, ultimately, the harder they fall.

Is there a heroine you’ve ever written that is most like you?
Not really. I think it’s pretty easy to see the individual traits that are common to all my heroines, and I would never try to write a weak-willed milquetoast heroine, but that’s largely because I have no patience with reading about such women. So my heroines’ personalities are more a reflection of the sort of heroines I like to read about than a reflection of me personally.
Readers first met Thomas Carrick in the Cynster holiday special By Winter’s Light. Did his earlier meeting with Lucilla described in that book affect the pair’s actions in this book?
That earlier meeting in By Winter’s Light sets the stage for Thomas and Lucilla’s romance. Both of them leave that first encounter with the knowledge that the other could be their future spouse. Lucilla is ready to accept that Thomas is her fated future husband, lover, and consort, but Thomas, having experienced a complementary visceral connection to Lucilla, concludes that, as he wishes to avoid love, then she is someone he would be wise to avoid.
So from the instant they part after that first encounter, they are set on opposing tracks—Lucilla expecting and waiting for Thomas to return to her side and claim her hand, and Thomas doing his level best to stay far away.
It’s a standoff, until the actions at the start of The Tempting of Thomas Carrick force—literally force—them together again.

Deerhounds feature in By Winter’s Light and also in The Tempting of Thomas Carrick. Why deerhounds?

I needed a large dog to accompany Thomas through the snowstorm in By Winter’s Light, a dog big enough to physically assist, and also the sort of dog that might have been in such a community—a gentry family in the Scottish uplands of the period. So I went searching for breeds of dogs, and stumbled upon Scottish deerhounds. The more I read about them, the more perfect they seemed, and so Hesta padded onto my stage, and from there, the addition of Artemis and Apollo was an obvious extrapolation.
The dogs are fascinating—a shaggy, curly-coated, quite large breed built for speed and with superb eyesight. They are sight-hounds, and also track on the ground by scent, and as their name suggests, were specifically bred to hunt deer in the rugged terrain.
However, the real impact of the deerhounds, story-wise, doesn’t occur until the next book, A Match for Marcus Cynster, in which the packs we learn about through The Tempting of Thomas Carrick, come into their own and play an active role in Marcus and his lady’s adventures.

Both By Winter’s Light and The Tempting of Thomas Carrick are set in Scotland, in the south western uplands. Were there any particular challenges in using such a setting?

By Winter’s Light and The Tempting of Thomas Carrick are both centered on the Vale of Casphairn, which was a setting first introduced in Scandal’s Bride, the story of Richard and Catriona, Lucilla and Marcus’s parents (more on that below). Thus the settings for the recent books were not a matter of choice, but rather mandated, a necessary return to a previous place.
Such a wild country setting is very useful on the one hand, and a drawback on the other. The rugged beauty and landscape is a plus, while the isolation and the distance from any larger town or place of social congregation severely limits the opportunities for social events, even country house dinners. Consequently, the action in the story remains at all times strongly focused on the interaction between the two principal characters, with little to no distraction from external events. That puts a heavier burden on the romance plot than would be the case in a more urban setting, but that does mean the romance dominates and is always front and center. So there’s positives and negatives in using such a setting, but, overall, such settings definitely have their place when writing romances.

In this book, you also take readers to Glasgow—you paint quite a cosmopolitan picture of the town. How true to life is that depiction?

I admit that my first mental vision of Glasgow was as a heavily industrialized town, centered on shipping on the Clyde. While the importance of shipping on the Clyde was correct, in the mid-1800s, Glasgow was a thriving merchant center with distinct aspirations toward the sophistication, polish, and civilized amenity we might associate with a seaport like Boston. In this period, Glasgow was a major merchant hub, and it was therefore highly prosperous, and the resulting wealth found expression in the houses and squares, the well-appointed offices and genteel clubs and in the evolving social scene.

Readers are familiar with Casphairn Manor, and the Vale of Casphairn, but the nearby village is Carsphairn. Was there a reason for the difference?

This is one of those tales of things that “would not happen now.” I wrote the first novel featuring the Vale of Casphairn and Casphairn Manor back in the days before Google Maps. Or any sort of satellite imagery, or even ready access to detailed maps via the internet. At the time, I had several detailed maps of England, but as the village of Carsphairn is a very small settlement, it was shown in small—not to say tiny and non-expandable—font. So I read the name as Casphairn, not the correct Carsphairn.
Years later, when I was writing Viscount Breckenridge to the Rescue, where the characters spend time in the Vale and at the manor, I was using Google Maps to study the areas to the east of where I had positioned the Vale, and when I zoomed in…I saw that the village name was really Carsphairn! Horrors! Luckily, I don’t think I’ve ever actually said the village itself was called Casphairn, only the Vale and the manor, but it was too late to change those—they’d already been written into history. So the Vale and the manor, both of which are fictitious, remain as Casphairn, while the village is correctly named Carsphairn.
Out of curiosity, I did go back to the original map. To the naked eye, it still looks like Casphairn—only with the help of a strong magnifying glass can you see that extra r.

Lucilla’s position as healer to the Vale community, and, indeed, all people under The Lady’s protection, features strongly in this book. How common were such healers?

Despite the rise of more formal medicine and the doctors who practiced it, traditional folk healers—those we might now term homeopathic healers or herbalists—were not uncommon into the late 1800s in England. In country areas, they would almost always be the first consulted, even by those living in the larger, wealthier houses. The history of herbal remedies is very deep and broad throughout the British Isles, and the more isolated the community, the greater the distance from a major town, the more likely that the people would turn first to the local “healer.” Midwifery and the treatment of common ailments remained largely the province of such healers even into the 1900s.
That said, as mentioned in this book and the next, in this period, when it came to interacting with the apparatus of law and order, for instance in formally reporting a death, the “doctor”—meaning a man formally trained in the western medical tradition—would be the one sent for.

This book is the first of the Cynster Next Generation Novels, and will be followed by Lucilla’s twin brother, Marcus’s story in June. Are there more Cynster Next Generation Novels to come?

Yes, indeed! As By Winter’s Light was in essence a pivotal volume, shifting focus from the original Bar Cynster generation to the lives of their near-adult children, and within the tale of By Winter’s Light were the seeds of Lucilla’s romance, then her book had to come first, in The Tempting of Thomas Carrick. And within Lucilla’s story lie the seeds of Marcus’s story, and as he is her twin, his book, A Match for Marcus Cynster, had to come next. It will be released on May 26, 2015.
But at the end of The Tempting of Thomas Carrick, and even more definitely at the end of A Match for Marcus Cynster, we catch up with the other Cynsters now facing up to the challenge of marriage and finding a suitable spouse. We see and appreciate that all is not going to be smooth sailing for such very robust individuals, neither the males nor the females. There are at least 6 more Cynster Next Generation novels to come—the romances of Devil’s three children, Sebastian, Michael, and Louisa, and those of the remaining “older group”—Prudence, Christopher, and Antonia Rawlings. After that…well, I’m sure that by the time I finish Louisa’s tale, we’ll know a lot more about Annabelle, Juliet, and Therese. And I already know what Calvin and Carter get up to, which should prove a lot of fun. Lots more to enjoy!

REVIEW

I was lucky enough to receive this gorgeous paperback, which is the format I highly recommend, in exchange for an honest review.

This was such an absolute delight to read! The illustration is exquisite, and the creative ideas provided before each chapter are quite resourceful. Adri and Lorea are adorable, the “Bridezilla” is incorrigible, and the mystery is elusive. I love Christensen’s writing style, and her descriptive narrative makes every setting, taste, smell, and feeling almost tangible. The websites and craft ideas are pure genius! Elegant, descriptive, and entertaining!

Brooklyn Holloway is an up and coming starlet with a solid head on her shoulders and her eyes wide open. It’s all about art for her and she isn’t looking to star in blockbuster films. She’s perfectly happy keeping a low profile and doing indie projects with a message.

When fate throws the two of them together on set; both are unprepared for their undeniable connection. Cade is drawn to Brook’s down-to-earth wholesomeness and she can’t help the irresistible pull of his good looks, sense of humor and chivalrous ways… So, when he begins to think he’s in love with her, resisting is next to impossible, despite being committed to someone else.

Only when filming ends and the world’s fascination with celebrity invades their bubble, can they decide if the emotions they felt on set were scripted, or forever.

tag19Cade moved a little, as if to say something, and I put a finger to his lips as a tear fell from my eye. “I couldn’t have done this with anyone else. You… brought me to life. Not just the character, but me. I’ve felt things with you, that… that I…” I stumbled over the words and shook my head, “…didn’t even know were possible. I care about you more than you know.”

I struggled to continue because I was crying softly. I sniffed back the tears as his hand tightened on mine again. “I’m really going to miss you.” I felt a sob well up within my chest, threatening to break free. “I’ll miss you, every day. I… um, I h-hope you’ll al- always remember…” My voice caught and I had to stop for a minute to keep from sobbing. I took a ragged breath, my throat seriously aching.

He brought my hand to his mouth to kiss my palm, his breath hot against my skin. “Oh, Brook…” he sighed. “This is the worst bloody moment of my life. It’s hell.”

I nodded. “I brought you something to remember me by, but please don’t open it until you get back to London,” I said, wiping away my tears with my free hand. I offered him a tumultuous smile, but I could barely manage it through my misery.

He took the package and placed a hand lovingly on the top. His eyes closed and he sighed heavily.

“I don’t need anything to remind me of you. I won’t forget a single detail, not a single second of our time together here,” he said softly. “But, thank you for wanting to leave me with some part of you. It means the world to me.”

When his eyes opened, he set the package on the bed then knelt down in front of me. One of his arms wrapped around my body and the other came up to cup my face, his thumb caressing the line of my jaw. My skin tingled where he touched me and my heart ached at the tears in his eyes. My shoulders started to shake in silent sobs. It hurt so fucking bad.

“Brook.” His beautiful blue eyes stared right into my heart. “You’ve always been stronger than me. You control your feelings so much better, than I.” The corners of his mouth lifted in a sad smile as his fingers brushed along my jaw.

I gave a little laugh through my tears. “I’m not feeling very strong right now, Cade.” I took a shaky breath. “The only way I’m gonna get through this is to believe that we’ll still keep in touch with each other. I feel so close to you. I don’t want to lose that.” A tear slipped from my lashes and slid down my face.

“There will be things we’ll need to do to promote the movie, so we’ll be together again for some of it.” His eyes searched my face as he spoke.

“I’m holding on to that. You’re so important to me.” I swallowed hard and bit my lip against the pain.

“We will be together again, I promise. I don’t know how I’ll survive without seeing your beautiful face every day.” I blushed at his words, and gave a shaky laugh, though my tears fell like rain.

I thought of my photo album gift, and knew now it was just what he would want.

“As the whole world will agree, you are the beautiful one.” My eyes rose to his face. His strong features were flooded with a mixture of confusion, sadness and denial.

He would never believe how extraordinary he was. He couldn’t see that he was amazing to everyone who met him and even millions who hadn’t. “I’ve always found you beautiful. From afar, I mean. When I watched your movies. But, who you are inside,” I placed my hand on his heart, “is the most beautiful part of you.” I tried to brush a tear away with the other. “I expected you to be so different then you turned out to be.”

Suddenly his arms went around me and my hands came around his forearms as we stared into each other’s eyes.

“My God, Brook. I know you don’t want me to say it, and I know I have no right, but if I don’t, it feels like I’ll die right here.” His voice broke on the words, and my heart stopped. “I’m SO in love with you.” He searched my face, trying to find an answer in my eyes. Tears were streaming down my cheeks as I put my hands up to hold his face.

“I love you…” he whispered, “and I don’t care if I’m going to hell for saying it out loud.” I could see how urgently he needed me to believe it. My heart thumped heavily and my breath caught, as I read the truth and emotion in his dark blue eyes.

“Cade.” At that moment, he was the only thing that existed in my world. I breathed his name as I kissed his eyes, his nose, his cheeks and forehead so softly. I opened my eyes, and moved my mouth down to his lips, hovering over his mouth.

Our kisses had always been so restrained. While passionate, so much was held back. We never really let ourselves kiss each other like I knew we both wanted to. I placed a feather light kiss on his lips, and I felt him draw in his breath, as his lips moved gently with mine. The moment of hesitation was wondrous: a pivotal moment in the fabric of my life, the precipice. If I jumped off, it either could kill me, or fill my wings and lift me up to heaven.

I knew this was the time to let Cade see my true feelings, and to take what I could of him while I had the chance. I could feel my body and my voice trembling, as I finally asked for what I’d been wanting for months.

“Cade, will you kiss me goodbye? As you… not Ryan,” I whispered against his lips.

He understood what I wanted, and his mouth crushed down on mine instantly, our lips parted, our tongues melding in deep, slow perfection. It was everything… and it wasn’t enough. As we kissed, we held each other tightly, our arms moving up and down each other’s bodies, and into each other’s hair, as our mouths devoured each other.

It was heaven. I never wanted the moment to end.

He pulled me closer, and I kissed him back so deeply that surely we would melt together. My tears and Cade’s mingled on our cheeks. Our kisses softened, still passionate and reverent. We couldn’t bear to separate and continued to hold each other, still placing little lingering clinging kisses on each other’s mouths as his hands cupped my face and he brushed my tears away with the pads of his thumbs. He took my lower lip between both of his and sucked on it lightly. I sighed into him, our breath meshing as he rested his forehead on mine.

I didn’t want to fight it anymore. I couldn’t.

How could I have ever questioned my feelings for this man? I loved him so much it stole my breath.

Prologue
I laugh as the late night host
takes a jab at the guest on his show and I settle back on
the sofa. Using the thick ring
I wear I pop the top off the cold beer I’ve just retrieved from the fridge
and take a long swig. I’m not really one for jewelry but over time I’ve
grown accustomed to the heavy band and some of its finer functions, like
how it doubles as a bottle opener quite nicely. With a flick of my wrist I
toss the cap on the coffee table and try to focus on the television, but I
struggle. I’m tired. It’s nothing new; I can’t remember the last time I
wasn’t exhausted. Had to be before David, I surmise. Surely I’d slept better
before the little monster latched onto me?
As my thoughts shift toward the
child I mute the television and turn toward the closed
door across the apartment,
behind which he lies sleeping. My keen Wanderer hearing
doesn’t detect anything amiss,
in fact it doesn’t detect anything at all, causing the hairs on the back
of my neck to stand on end. A paralyzing fear snakes its way through my
stomach and before I can think twice I’m off the sofa. Mother’s
instinct…that’s how one of the women at the M.O.P.S. (Mothers of
Preschoolers) group I’d been going to had described it. At the time I’d
thought she was nuts and had almost let her know, using very specific terminology
that there was no fucking way I was plagued by some feminine sixth sense. Then
I remembered that they all thought I was a woman, thanks to a little mental
tampering on my part so I could fit in. Looking at it in that context her
assessment wasn’t so offensive, I decided. Still I’d Googled that shit
when I got home only to discover she’d been spot on. The unexplainable
feelings of dread that I sometimes get are apparently frequent in mothers
In a flash I’m barreling
through David’s door with no consideration for the sleeping
occupant. I can feel a light
breeze from the window that I don’t remember leaving open and panicking I
flip on a light. I run to the bed and yank back the covers that I find nothing
out of the ordinary despite already knowing something is very, very wrong.
“David?” I yell. Sweat beads on
my forehead as my eyes dart from the empty bed to the
fluttering curtains and lock on
to the malevolent grin and dark luminescent eyes floating in the shadows.
I lunge for the Sylph calmly hovering mere inches beyond the window sill.
“David,” he says, mimicking my
cry with mocking humor. Before I can get my hands
on him he dissipates, leaving
tufts of bright smoke that swiftly extinguish before my eyes.
“David!” I bellow again,
fingers dug so tightly into the window frame that it cracks. I
clutch at my chest and spin
about disoriented; it’s difficult to think. I have to move, I   have to find
him. My battle-ready body responds to the simple command and all higher
reasoning checks out. I leap through the window into the night; it’s time
to hunt.

It seemed only natural for Victoria Zak to want to write in the Scottish historical romance genre. Add to the fact, she was also a paranormal romance junkie, there was no doubt that her influences would be the driving force behind her stories.

Although, she never sought out a writing career, her desire for the written word grew the more she read. Her love for Scotland, curiosity of history, and passion for romance has inspired her to write her first book, Highland Burn. The Guardians of Scotland series continues this winter with Highland Storm.

Now, Victoria Zak lives in the sunshine state with her husband, two beautiful children, and three furry friends. Living in paradise, being a stay at home, and to be able to share her stories has been a blessing.

Victoria loves to hear from her readers. You can connect with her through FB, Twitter, G+, and her website, http://www.victoriazalromance.com.

Excerpt:

I put my phone in my pocket, standing up. I watch as Ella gets out, and she opens the back door. Her little boy gets out, holding a bag of food. He starts walking toward the house but stops when he sees me.
“Hey, little man. My name’s Marcus. What’s yours?” I kneel down to his level. He stands there and stares at me.
Ella comes up behind him. “It’s okay. You can talk to him. He’s mama’s friend.”
She raises her eyes up to me and grins.
I return my attention back to him, and he narrows his eyes.
“I’m Tyler. I’m four years old. Mama is twenty-four. How old are you?”
I smile as I answer, “I’m twenty-nine. Is it okay if I hang out with you and your mom?”
He shrugs, glancing up at Ella. “You have to ask Mama. She’s the Mama,” he says in all seriousness.
I nod, glancing to Ella. She’s smiling also.
“So what do you say, Ella? Can I hang out with you two tonight?”
“Sure,” she steps up to the porch to unlock the door.

REVIEW

This was a very fast-paced novel that never stays on one path!

This was one wicked ride that left me dizzy, but I’m anxiously awaiting the rest of the story. I’m a thrill junkie; therefore, this novel was my cup of tea. The writing style is creative, and though the story line may not seem uncommon, the events that take place are very irregular. Our heroine deviates from the predicted path often, and there was not a moment in which I could tell whom she could trust. While some of the actions are typical of an erratic teenage girl, there were a few instances in which I felt she could’ve used a little more intellect. However; this novel is so addictive I do not feel deterred, and I look forward to reading the next installment.  Excellent debut!

This is not a stand-alone and I recommend it for ages sixteen and up.
